Next Big Hit?

As a radio station Music Director, I get sent a whole bunch of new music every day. Some of it I fall in love with personally (see MIDLAKE), others I think our listeners will get into, even if I don't love it myself. And then there are some tunes that just grab me and say "I AM GOING TO BE A HIT!" That happened last May when I heard Lorde's "Royals" for the first time. It happened last summer when I heard Arctic Monkeys 'Do I Wanna Know". And now it's happening again:

This is a band out of South Africa called Kongos - the song is "Come With Me Now" - and you're probably going to be hearing it everywhere soon...

Who Is "Star-Lord"?

Have you seen the trailer for Marvel's Guardians of The Galaxy yet? Go ahead, take a minute or two:

Now that you've seen it, you might be wondering, "who the heck is 'Star-Lord'?" He's been around for a while - and a while back I took a look at the character's history and talked to some of the folks who wrote him over the years. You can read those articles over at Comic Related:

Part One: http://comicrelated.com/news/17021/star-lord-part-1
Part Two: http://comicrelated.com/news/17937/star-lord-part-2
Part Three: http://comicrelated.com/news/18390/star-lord-part-3

These were written back when the movie was first announced, so some of my references are a little dated. But if you're curious about the character this will fill you in!

Rehearsal Read?

Hear free audio science fiction with the Adventures of Alibi Jones every week on Glow-in-the-Dark Radio – written and read by Mike Luoma! Something a little different on this week's show – taking a break from Alibi Jones and The Sunrise of Hur on this episode to bring you a "rehearsal" of the piece I read today at Phoenix Books in Burlington, as part of the Vermont Science Fiction Writers series put on by the blog Geek Mountain State and Andrew Liptak.
It's the beginning of the novella "Alibi Jones and the Ghost in the Machine" – which came out last year in the Hunting Ghosts anthology from Black Oak Media. Wanted to do a run-through before my read in public, and instead of letting that get in the way of the podcast, I thought I'd let it become the podcast this time. So if you were there and wanted to hear it again, or you missed it an want to hear it now, enjoy!

My First Favorite New Album of 2014!

I'm still an "album guy" - I love to find an entire album I can get into by a band or artist, one that sustains itself all the way through with little to no filler. As 2013 ended, the Arctic Monkeys' "AM" had been doing that for me - still love the album! It's around "proper" length, too, 42 minutes long. Another favorite album experience from last year was Phosphorescent's "Muchacho" - although it clocked in at a whopping 46 minutes.

I've always felt the best albums were about 45 minutes long. Goes way back - not just because my commute  to work is 45 minutes each way currently. That's one thing vinyl helped bands get right - maybe it was because you could only fit around 22 minutes of music on each side of a Long Play (LP) album, but that length seemed somehow correct, as if that time constraint helped bands focus their material down to what mattered (If you're into semantics, I term the body of work "album" because that's what the word album means - a collection, like a photo album, for a different example. The format the music is presented on and in can change - vinyl, cassette, CD, file - it's still an album. "EP" - extended play - and "LP" are modifiers, even when the word "album" is left off. And? single... is just a single. By the way? There's really no justification for calling an extra track that comes with a main single track a "B-Side" anymore - 'cept that it sounds cool, so we'll roll with that. Ahem. Semantics digression done).

These days, the album I'm listening to almost too much, on the commute and at home, is the latest from Midlake - "Antiphon". The band is new to me, though they've been around for a while. The album came out late last year - they just sent a song out to radio, which is how I heard of them. Learned they went through a big personnel shift recording this album, when their original lead singer and songwriter left. Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Eric Pulido stepped up to lead vocals, two new members were added, and they started over, crafting an album I've been playing on repeat!

The vocals are layered with subtle harmonies that occasionally soar - drums remind me of Jon Fishman's busy Nick Mason-esque playing - keyboards and flute are reminiscent of British bands of the early seventies without sounding "retro" - the songs sometimes remind me of pre-Dark Side of The Moon Pink Floyd, early Alan Parsons Project or early Moody Blues, but without the hollow ring of mimicry.  Midlake has arrived at this place on their own. Who knew you could find your way here from Denton, Texas?

We've added the "single" - "The Old And The Young" - to our rotation at The Point (http://pointfm.com). They've got a very cool video for the tune:

Speaking of video, Midlake has Antiphon up on YouTube for streaming, so you can hear it for yourself! Be sure to switch to HD - the video stays the same, but the audio gets MUCH better:

It's my first new favorite album of the new year!

The Adventures of Alibi Jones #1 - Expanded: Underwater aliens... Time travel... Con games... Murder... Welcome to the world of ALIBI JONES! The now-expanded, jam-packed debut issue of "The Adventures of Alibi Jones" is over 40 pages, with four complete stories by writer Mike Luoma and artists Meisha, Rhys ap Gwyn and Juan Carlos Quattordio, plus a cover and pin-up art by Federico Guillen.

Good Samaritan: Unto Dust #1 - Good Samaritan is tangling with a new menace, a creature preying on children, a molester with delusions of being a vampire. And "normal" life is presenting its own problems, as Ernesto Cabral, the new Cardinal of the Archdiocese, apparently has it in for Father Sullivan! He hassles Sullivan after Father Bill helps a young, unwed mother-to-be. The Cardinal might ruin his career... but the creature could take his life! Written and lettered by Mike Luoma, Art by Federico Guillen, colors by Ken Lateer.

Top Ten Releases of 2013 - Part Two

My subjective list of the "Best of 2013" in music releases continues with part two - albums six through ten. As with the Top Ten - Part One, these are not in a fixed and regimented order - they're just the releases I listened to and enjoyed the most this year.

6. Blitzen Trapper "VII" -  the band's 7th album is slinkier with more of a "late night vibe" (in the band's own words). I'll be honest - haven't warmed up to it as much as I did their last one, American Goldwing, but that album has a place in my heart and soul, so not every release makes it that far inside. "Thirsty Man" has a great groove going on:

7. Pearl Jam "Lightning Bolt" - it's been a while since a PJ album got inside and under my skin like this one has. Great collection of songs this time out - personal favorite right now is "Swallowed Whole" - solid effort this time from Pearl Jam:

8. The Avett Brothers "Magpie and the Dandelion" - I like this, but it didn't go higher on my top ten because it feels like a little bit of an afterthought, coming right on the heels of last year's "The Carpenter". The songs were recorded at the same time as that set's. There's even a live cut on the album. Still... it's quality. New music from the Avetts, what's not to like? Did not realize the lead track was about modeling until I caught the video:

9. The Lone Bellow (self-titled debut) - one of the first songs that really blew me away this year was "You Never Need Nobody" by The Lone Bellow. Their self-titled album was released a little later in the spring. It's really that first track that has them on the list, though. The rest of the album is good - but "You Never Need..." is soul-chills fantastic!

10. Mike Doughty "Circles Super Bon Bon..." One of the more interesting efforts this year - with the aid of PledgeMusic and his fans, Mike Doughty revisited the songs from what had been a dark period of his life, his years with Soul Coughing.

Great seeing him do the material live, too. Had a good chat in The Point studios before his Higher Ground show as well:

So that's my Top Ten... in no particular order. Thanks for checking it out! Also? If you're interested, I put together a mix of the best tracks of 2013: http://8tracks.com/brotherzag/missed-in-2013

Top Ten Releases of 2013 - Part One

Been a great year for music! Some favorites came back with strong efforts. Some new favorites emerged. Love to share the stuff I've found and liked. Any "Best Of" list is inherently subjective - there's no reason mine is any more "legit" than anyone else's - but as I'm lucky enough to work in my dream job as Music Director for The Point (http://pointfm.com) here in Vermont, I get exposed to a lot of new releases over the course of the year, giving me a pretty broad selection to choose from and compare to. Maybe I'll turn you on to something you've missed. This is part one - the "Top Five" - though the order isn't really fixed...

1. Arctic Monkeys "AM" - This gets to be number one because it's freshest - I'm listening to it A LOT right now. There's a kind of... slinky-ness? I'm reminded of Queen, but AM is more rhythmic - there's a hint of Hall and Oates here as well. Both are on display immediately as the album opens with "Do I Wanna Know" - if this hooks you, you'll wanna get the album. Knew of the Arctic Monkeys before "AM". Like me, you may wanna get to know them better...

2. Frank Turner "Tape Deck Heart" - Frank's follow-up to "England Keep My Bones" was his first for a major label, and the songs feel a bit more polished, though there's still a hint of the punkish Billy Bragg and Joe Strummer influences Turner has proudly displayed in the past. "The Way I Tend To Be" is enjoying some radio play right now, and "Recovery" was spun some this past summer. The whole album's worth a listen, especially for gems like "Plain Sailing Weather" and - "Good and Gone" - which can't be played on the radio without some editing.

Got the chance to visit with Frank on the radio back in August (dream job), where he played a couple of... er... more "allowable" songs:

3. Phosphorescent "Muchacho" - Though Matthew Houck - who is Phosphorescent - has been around for a while, his work was new to me this year. "Song For Zula" was a majestic introduction, with its lofty strings and the fragile strength of the vocals. The entire album is a mesmerizing masterwork of cosmic Americana, a concept album of sorts about crazy hopes born out of desperation. Surprised me how much this one spoke to my soul - it was subtle in its osmosis.

There was a transcendant live perfomance of "Song For Zula" on Jimmy Fallon's show - for some reason that's not available. So you get the cavewoman video. Which, frankly, I don't get...

4. Queens of the Stone Age - "...Like Clockwork" - Josh Homme & Co.'s return was anticipated, hyped, teased, welcomed and confirmed with the delivery of the new one this summer. QOTSA's melodic, layered heaviosity pulsed and throbbed... and did not disappoint. A tonic for my heavier side...

5. Wake Owl "Wild Country" (EP) - There's a sort of delicacy and desolation to the title track and the best songs on this short wonder.

The songs on the EP are mostly the solo creations of Colyn Cameron, with some colorings from his collaborators - as he explained in a visit to The Point.

That's half of my "Top Ten" - I'll have the rest for you a little later in the month!
