Top Ten Releases of 2013 - Part Two

My subjective list of the "Best of 2013" in music releases continues with part two - albums six through ten. As with the Top Ten - Part One, these are not in a fixed and regimented order - they're just the releases I listened to and enjoyed the most this year.

6. Blitzen Trapper "VII" -  the band's 7th album is slinkier with more of a "late night vibe" (in the band's own words). I'll be honest - haven't warmed up to it as much as I did their last one, American Goldwing, but that album has a place in my heart and soul, so not every release makes it that far inside. "Thirsty Man" has a great groove going on:

7. Pearl Jam "Lightning Bolt" - it's been a while since a PJ album got inside and under my skin like this one has. Great collection of songs this time out - personal favorite right now is "Swallowed Whole" - solid effort this time from Pearl Jam:

8. The Avett Brothers "Magpie and the Dandelion" - I like this, but it didn't go higher on my top ten because it feels like a little bit of an afterthought, coming right on the heels of last year's "The Carpenter". The songs were recorded at the same time as that set's. There's even a live cut on the album. Still... it's quality. New music from the Avetts, what's not to like? Did not realize the lead track was about modeling until I caught the video:

9. The Lone Bellow (self-titled debut) - one of the first songs that really blew me away this year was "You Never Need Nobody" by The Lone Bellow. Their self-titled album was released a little later in the spring. It's really that first track that has them on the list, though. The rest of the album is good - but "You Never Need..." is soul-chills fantastic!

10. Mike Doughty "Circles Super Bon Bon..." One of the more interesting efforts this year - with the aid of PledgeMusic and his fans, Mike Doughty revisited the songs from what had been a dark period of his life, his years with Soul Coughing.

Great seeing him do the material live, too. Had a good chat in The Point studios before his Higher Ground show as well:

So that's my Top Ten... in no particular order. Thanks for checking it out! Also? If you're interested, I put together a mix of the best tracks of 2013: http://8tracks.com/brotherzag/missed-in-2013

Top Ten Releases of 2013 - Part One

Been a great year for music! Some favorites came back with strong efforts. Some new favorites emerged. Love to share the stuff I've found and liked. Any "Best Of" list is inherently subjective - there's no reason mine is any more "legit" than anyone else's - but as I'm lucky enough to work in my dream job as Music Director for The Point (http://pointfm.com) here in Vermont, I get exposed to a lot of new releases over the course of the year, giving me a pretty broad selection to choose from and compare to. Maybe I'll turn you on to something you've missed. This is part one - the "Top Five" - though the order isn't really fixed...

1. Arctic Monkeys "AM" - This gets to be number one because it's freshest - I'm listening to it A LOT right now. There's a kind of... slinky-ness? I'm reminded of Queen, but AM is more rhythmic - there's a hint of Hall and Oates here as well. Both are on display immediately as the album opens with "Do I Wanna Know" - if this hooks you, you'll wanna get the album. Knew of the Arctic Monkeys before "AM". Like me, you may wanna get to know them better...

Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? from David Wilson on Vimeo.

2. Frank Turner "Tape Deck Heart" - Frank's follow-up to "England Keep My Bones" was his first for a major label, and the songs feel a bit more polished, though there's still a hint of the punkish Billy Bragg and Joe Strummer influences Turner has proudly displayed in the past. "The Way I Tend To Be" is enjoying some radio play right now, and "Recovery" was spun some this past summer. The whole album's worth a listen, especially for gems like "Plain Sailing Weather" and - "Good and Gone" - which can't be played on the radio without some editing.

Got the chance to visit with Frank on the radio back in August (dream job), where he played a couple of... er... more "allowable" songs:

3. Phosphorescent "Muchacho" - Though Matthew Houck - who is Phosphorescent - has been around for a while, his work was new to me this year. "Song For Zula" was a majestic introduction, with its lofty strings and the fragile strength of the vocals. The entire album is a mesmerizing masterwork of cosmic Americana, a concept album of sorts about crazy hopes born out of desperation. Surprised me how much this one spoke to my soul - it was subtle in its osmosis.

There was a transcendant live perfomance of "Song For Zula" on Jimmy Fallon's show - for some reason that's not available. So you get the cavewoman video. Which, frankly, I don't get...

4. Queens of the Stone Age - "...Like Clockwork" - Josh Homme & Co.'s return was anticipated, hyped, teased, welcomed and confirmed with the delivery of the new one this summer. QOTSA's melodic, layered heaviosity pulsed and throbbed... and did not disappoint. A tonic for my heavier side...

5. Wake Owl "Wild Country" (EP) - There's a sort of delicacy and desolation to the title track and the best songs on this short wonder.

The songs on the EP are mostly the solo creations of Colyn Cameron, with some colorings from his collaborators - as he explained in a visit to The Point.

That's half of my "Top Ten" - I'll have the rest for you a little later in the month!

Watch and Listen - Dan Wilson's New Tune "Disappearing"

I've been a fan of Dan's and the music he makes for a loooong time - first "discovered" Trip Shakespeare when they released their "Lulu" album in 1991 - which I think I first picked up because that was my sister's nickname. Hear Dan's brother Matt who'd started the band wanted to call them Kirk Shakespeare after James T. Kirk and William S., but that may just be Wikipedia talkin'. Tried to get them on the radio back then, but I was only the Assistant Music Director at the time... alas.

Still, loved loved LOVED that album. Went back and listened to all their other releases. Even loved their cover EP VOLT when they put it out on Twin Tone after A&M dropped them. I was a late-to-the-party Trip Shakespeare fan. So... when Dan's new band (including Trip S's bassist John Munson) put out their first EP, I WAS the Music Director - so we played Semisonic "The Prize" on WIZN early on in 1995. "Down In Flames" off the first full length Great Divide got more play. The next album Feeling Strangely Fine held their big hit, though - "Closing Time". The album also featured a guest appearance by Matt on the tune "Never You Mind" whose lyrics referenced Star Trek...

After the next album All About Chemistry received a rather lukewarm reception in 2001 the band went on hiatus, and Dan began doing more songwriting and solo work. His first solo album Free Life, executive produced by Rick Rubin, came out in 2007 - another favorite album of mine. Since then he's helped co-write some major Grammy winning hits - like Adele's "Someone Like You" and Dixie Chicks' "Not Ready To Make Nice", in addition to loads of other collaborations.

Now, Canvasback Music has announced Dan's new tune "Disappearing" as the first release in their Canvasclub Singles Series, out now digitally and out as a vinyl 7" on December 3rd. It's also the first track we're hearing from Dan's upcoming second solo album, due out in Spring of 2014. And Dan has just released a beautiful lyric video with his illustrations for the song as well. Sara Bareilles is helping with some vocals - check out "Disappearing":

When the Prog Turned To Cheese...

There Must Be Some Misunderstanding...

About to play "Magic Touch" by Mike Oldfield on the Hot Lunch Special on The Point, the radio station where I do my thing every day from 10a to 3p. Playing it in honor of the birthday of the late drummer and percussionist Pierre Moerlen who played with Oldfield, among others. The song, with vocals by Max Bacon, appeared on Oldfield's 1987 release Islands, and came out as a single in February of 1988. Bacon was "hot" at the time (and crispy? ...never mind...), coming off a successful stint with GTR - the so-called "Supergroup"co-led by Steve Howe and Steve Hackett whose one 1986 album produced the hit "When the Heart Rules The Mind"...all of which led me to recall that... Wow - in the 1980s, Progressive Rock really turned to CHEESE - or as J.D. Considine wrote in his three-letter review of GTR's album - "SHT". "Magic Touch" is - in a way - the pinnacle of that cheesy period.

What happened?

Money. It's a gas. And it made many within the upper echelons of Progressive Rock turn to cheesy attempts at making pop music in the 80s. But who can blame them? For some strange reason, as the 1980s opened, formerly progressive bands like Genesis and Yes were scoring chart hits. The Duke album was the turning point for Genesis. "Turn it On Again" made a dent at Rock radio - still "AOR" - Album Oriented Rock - at the time. But it was "Misunderstanding" that really began the cheesification process.

Yes' hitmaking days began a little later, with the release of 1983's 90125. Trevor Rabin's joining the band had already indicated a radical shift in the Yes camp. The project was originally to have been known as Cinema, after Yes broke up in 1981, but with the almost last-minute inclusion of original yes vocalist Jon Anderson the group morphed back into Yes - albeit a very different sounding Yes. "Owner of A Lonely Heart" became the bands only #1 pop hit.

Of course, former Yes guitarist Steve Howe had already emerged with his own power-pop, progressive rock "supergroup" a year earlier. Hardcore old prog fans had been buzzing about the new project Howe was a part of as it came together. News got out that Howe was wood-shedding with former King Crimson and U.K. bassist and vocalist John Wetton, Emerson Lake and Palmer drummer Carl Palmer, and Geoffrey Downes, recently of Yes (Drama) and, er, The Buggles. The bands they'd been part of had crafted some of the most complex, ornate and intricate progressive rock of the 60s and 70s. Anticipation was high - what sort of baroque godliness would their combined efforts sound like? No one in the progressive rock world expected the simplistic pop song structures of Asia to be the result, though the involvement of Geffen A&R wizard John Kalodner (responsible for Aerosmith's big late 80s comeback) in the band's construction was telling - he was also later responsible for Coverdale-Page. The March 1982 release of the first Asia album was followed by a lengthy tour whose venues needed to be upgraded to arenas due to ticket demands as the band's success took off.

Asia's follow-up album Alpha didn't do as well, and the band was faltering by late 1983. Yes and Genesis fared better. Big Generator - Yes' follow up to 90125 - spawned minor hits like "Love Will Find A Way". Genesis turned into a hit machine - Phil Collins' solo success made him a ubiquitous pop presence, and the band kept up by releasing Abacab (1981), Three Sides Live (1982), Genesis (1983), Invisible Touch (1986) - like Yes' "Owner", Genesis' "Invisible Touch" became the bands only #1 U.S. pop hit.

Yeah, I can't take "Invisible Touch" - so here's the slightly cooler "Land of Confusion"...

Things began to fall apart as the '80s wore on. Genesis made boatloads of cash but stopped making new music until the 90s - and only made one more album with Phil Collins. The Yes camp dissolved into in-fighting once again, with the 90125 line-up breaking up. That, in a way, paved the way for the ABWH - Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe - reunion. For this progressive rock fan, that ABWH project was a light in the darkness, hope for the return of great music in a world of pop. Backstage at their show at Great Woods, Rick Wakeman told me he thought this line-up had another "Close To the Edge" in them - think we got that in the later Yes tune "Mind Drive". But before that reunion could happen, Steve Howe had that last stab at 80's pop stardom - GTR.

Kind of painful to watch two amazing guitar players play such basic material. Howe and Hackett should both be making better music than this - thankfully, both later returned to their musical senses. And there's Max Bacon on the vocals for GTR - the gig that got him the Mike Oldfield vocal spot we began with. That brings us back around full circle - or cheese-wheel, as the case may be. Yep, Progressive Rock turned to cheese in the 1980s - weird how much of this stuff sounds alike, too. Lucky for all of us, it got better...

An Amazing Friday...

My recap of my trip out to Boulder continues...You wouldn't think each day could get better, but each did - Had the best time on Friday!
Arthur Lee Land was the first performer at 10 am before the morning panel. He's one of those one-man-band types, with many loops and a variety of instruments - seemed like the guy could play everything! He'd have stood out more if the next band hadn't been exceptional...
I'd met Steven McMorran of the band Satellite when his record company brought him by the station earlier this summer to play us a couple of songs from their upcoming album. We had lunch together, had a great talk about the creative process. And with just he and his acoustic, the couple songs he played sounded pretty good. Flash forward to Friday when Satellite were the first band on after lunch - those songs came to epic life with a full band and Steven singing his heart and soul out on stage. Wow! Such passion along with expert songwriting combined to create something special. After hearing them live, Zeb and I decided we had to play them - their tune "Say The Words" went into rotation yesterday!
The Secret Sisters came on next - a radical shifting of musical gears! They were discovered by Jack White a couple years ago and have a sort of retro-southern, old-timey gospel feel to their music. They're still working on their next album, but played a bunch of the new songs for us. Their quirky, down-homey charm was, well... charming. But kind of low key after the nearly over-the-top delivery of Satellite - kinda like seeing a Salvation Army band after U2...
We headed back inside for another panel and band. I've seen the next group a couple of times now - and they don't disappoint. With three siblings singing together out of the four singers in the band, Delta Rae have killer built-in harmonies. They performed before the afternoon panel and so only had time for three songs, but they filled the conference room with their passion and certainly won over whatever part of the radio crowd there they hadn't yet. Then it was out to another afternoon Cocktail Party and performances by Marie Miller and Gooding. Have to confess - was in chat mode through most of this one, didn't really get to appreciate the artists' sets.
Went to a dinner with The Lone Bellow and Satellite that evening. Nice to see The Lone Bellow again - we had fun looking back on their performance at Sugarbush at one of The Point's apres ski parties. It was also nice to be able to congratulate Steven on Satellite's performance earlier! After dinner it was back up to The Fox Theater and the outdoor stage for the final night of shows on The Hill in Boulder. Grace and Tony were playing a nice acoustic set when I arrived, but I didn't stick around too long - Saints of Valory were about to go on inside the Fox! As the guy who broke the band at radio, wanted to be there for their breakout performance. Plus, I wanted to see what they'd decided on for a setlist after their discussions the night before. Godfrey got his way - they did "Rain Fall" - a tune that always gets the Burlington crowds going. They also covered Lorde - "Royals" - an odd choice, but... OK. Sounded good! It seemed like they won over the crowd as the performance went on - "Rain Fall" really connected! Great set from the guys.
When they finished, I headed quickly back outside and heard The Lone Bellow launch into "You Never Need Nobody" to start their set before I'd even gotten to their stage. We were the first station in the country to play them, as well, so it was a back-to-back breaking band experience ;) Zack from The Lone Bellow kind of lost his voice by the end of the set, but it was still a potent performance - they are so good! And, again, so cool to see a band I believe in winning over new radio converts.
When they finished it was back into the theater for the final two sets. City and Colour impressed - Dallas Green has put together a talented touring band to back him up on the road. The Airborne Toxic Event didn't do as much for me live. Strangely enough, they played the 2nd cover of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire" I'd heard that day - and Satellite's earlier version had been a a cool rearrangement, whereas Airborne's sounded a bit like a dirge.
Made it back to the hotel after their set for the last "Late Night Lounge" and a set by former member of Crooked Still, Aoife O'Donovan. She was good - I was losing steam, but she kept me entertained and awake. I met her after, turned out she was from Massachusetts, a few towns over from where I grew up. Kind of neat! After the set change Lucy Schwartz came on - I'd liked her last album, would have liked to hear her new material, but... I was done. Had to sleep!
Saturday morning brought our last event, The Triple A Awards Brunch. Truth & Salvage Co. played a spirited opening set, a bit heavy on the Nashville twang for my taste, though I did enjoy their cover of Joe South's "Games People Play." And it was nice to finally see Over the Rhine perform, although it struck me that The Civil Wars have kind of stolen their thunder - didn't seem quite fair. But life isn't fair. After all, I was nominated for Music Director of the Year again and didn't win. And Zeb got the nom for Program Director and didn't win. BUT then again... when they announced the winner of Station of the Year (Markets 50+) - we won! WNCS took the award! Zeb and I got to get up, make brief "speeches"... What a great finish to an amazing stretch of days in Boulder! After that, it was off to the airport and many hours of traveling to finally get home in Vermont just after midnight Saturday.
Quite a trip!
