A New Mission for BC!

Happy Holidays! As I'm prepping this episode a little early, there isn't much in the way of news or promotion this week - I'm afraid you'll just have to settle for three straight chapters of VATICAN ASSASSIN! These three together tell the story of BC's trip out to Fortune Station, as he seeks to assassinate the leader of a throwback cult that has occupied the once-abandoned space station.

Free science fiction adventure - my gift to you this holiday season and all year 'round, on the Glow-in-the-Dark Radio Podcast!

"Think Frank Miller’s HOLY TERROR without all of that bat-shit annoying Frank Miller-ness and you’ll get the drift of this one..."

"This is a fun book which empowers women while it entertains and inspires hope."

Sometimes you get a review that makes your MONTH. This review of Ben Ferrari and my Souverain #1 by Ambush Bug over at Ain't It Cool News did that for me. Souverain #1 is Earthbound Comics' book for December:

"Collecting five short stories featuring the female vigilante Souverain, this issue is a great introduction to the character created by Ben Ferrari and written by Ferrari and Mike Luoma. Set in the conflict of the Middle East in Iraq, Souverain serves as a masked force for justice, operating by going AWOL from her military unit in order to fight crimes that happen on foreign soil. Part revenge fantasy/part bold superhero adventure, this is a character that one most likely wouldn’t see in a mainstream comic. Ben Ferrari writes and draws the first tale, a bit of an origin story for our heroine. Mike Luoma steps in to write two hard-biting, hot button-pressing  prose tales. Think Frank Miller’s HOLY TERROR without all of that bat-shit annoying Frank Miller-ness and you’ll get the drift of this one. This book successfully mixes real world issues with superheroism, while remaining respectful to the men and women fighting overseas and pointing a finger at atrocities performed around the world. This is a fun book which empowers women while it entertains and inspires hope. - Ambush Bug"  http://www.aintitcool.com/node/52200#11

I corrected "prose" because that's not quite right - I did write a brand new prose piece, "The Kid", for the book, but he second "story" - the interconnected "One Nation - Under God - Liberty and Justice for All" is a good old fashioned comic book story with art by Ben and letters by Matt Grant and myself.

Best Tunes of 2011

It was a pretty good year, despite Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene's attempt to wash some of Vermont off the map. Pop culture-wise, while much was cringe-worthy there were some real gems - take Game of Thrones, for example. I think it's the first time a TV series got me reading a book series - and both were fantastic.

It feels like music is getting better - more bands are doing creative, interesting things. Of course, I've been exposed to more new music over the last couple years, so that may be coloring my judgement. As I get into new releases by bands with histories, I do like having earlier releases to go back to check out.

I've been asked to pick my Top Five Albums of 2011 a couple of times, so I've had to think about it... it keeps changing... so this top five is my third different one I've committed to print!

Number Five: Opeth - Heritage

Number Four: My Morning Jacket - Circuital

Number Three: Blitzen Trapper - American Goldwing

Number Two: Bright Eyes - The People's Key

Number One: Frank Turner - England Keep My Bones

SOUVERAIN #1 is OUT!

My new book is out today - SOUVERAIN  #1! More a group effort than mine alone, of course. The character was created by Earthbound Comics founder Ben Ferrari, and he wrote the origin story in this issue. And Ben draws and inks all the comic book stories collected here. Former Earthbound honcho Matt Grant letters three of the four stories - I lettered the fourth and did the production work on the issue - spending a bunch of time on things you won't really notice but that hopefully make the book more cool!

For those who asked - Mike, love Souverain, but do I have to buy all those Lady Fight issues to get her whole story? Not anymore! All four of Souverain's Lady Fight stories are now gathered here under one cover -  And what a cover! With pencils and inks by Seth Frail and color by Chuck Michael Obach, the brand-new cover art really sets the tone for the issue - Beautiful!

For those now wondering - Mike, why should I buy this new issue if the stories are from those other books? Well, I've written a brand-new prose short story "The Kid" with new illustrations by Kitae Kim - there's a bunch of brand-new material!

For those of you wondering who the hell Souverain is, in these pages you can "Meet the woman who works with the U.S. Army by day and strikes out at night delivering justice on her own as the vigilante SOUVERAIN!"

It's in print here (Indy Planet): http://indyplanet.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=6337

Getting Away With Murder...

Can BC get away with murder?

The Vatican Assassin has done his job - Governor Meredith McEntyre of Lunar Prime is dead. So far, no one suspects BC. Authorities are not yet even certain that McEntyre was killed - it looked like a heart attack. But McEntyre's widower Daniel is about to accuse BC of being her killer!
That's all you need to know to dive right in as Vatican Assassin continues - chapters five and six on this episode of Glow-in-the-Dark Radio!
Got carried away creating bonus material for this episode - there's more bonus stuff than chapters, and more than an hour's worth of both! Thought about breaking The History of the UIN up into two parts, but decided you could do that if you want. Just to forewarn ya - there won't be much next week with the holiday and all. But there will be an episode.
Come back each week for more chapters and exclusive background material from VATICAN ASSASSIN!

Here's a look at page one of the prose short story in the new upcoming Souverain #1:

The Earthbound Comics release for December is Souverain #1 by Ben Ferrari and myself, along with Matthew Grant, Kitae Kim and Vic Moya, and Seth Frail and Chuck Michael Obach on cover art.

Spent a long time on the lettering and layout on this, too - but, again, I wanted it to be right :)

Black and Blue From the New 52

This is not a complaining, bitching and moaning blog post. Got no problem with the New 52. I approve of the idea, the sort of risk-taking relaunch DC approached but failed to follow through on before – they almost did it a few times. Kudos to them for finally following through. It’s working. Sales are up. Digital sales are finally beginning to uptick. The timing on that couldn't be better with the excitement for new tablets and the market exploding right in front of us. Those new toys are going to need content. Could be time for a new comics renaissance. The future looks bright.

But right now? OW! OUCH! CUT IT OUT!
I’m getting black and blued by the New 52!

Call it "sucking all the air out of the room" or "dominating the market" or whatever you’d like, DC’s New 52 initiative has grabbed hold of the comic world’s collective consciousness and ferociously refuses to let go. Even now, Google "New 52" and you’ll discover article after article, blog post after blog post on "The New 52 – Two Months In!" and the like. The coverage is intense and exhaustive, from the highest trafficked websites down to the smallest comic book bloggers.

Hell, s’pose this is even more coverage... hurm.

This is all great for DC. As a fan of their iconic characters, gifted artists and talented writers, I’m happy for them. But their market saturation and domination makes the life of an independent comic creator an awful tough slog right now – it’s not easy for the little guy to fight against Supes, Batman and the rest of the Justice League!

My new book The Adventures of Alibi Jones #1 came out last month from small indie publisher Earthbound Comics. It’s a pretty sharp 40 page black and white comic with fantastic art and pretty good writing and lettering, if I do say so myself. It’s gotten a couple of great reviews. Just a couple, though. Because Alibi Jones is no match for Superman – it’s been almost impossible to garner coverage and reviews for my little indie book in the wake of the New 52.

Comic book blogs and websites aren’t doing anything wrong. They’re covering and writing about what the comic book buying public are spending their hard-earned cash on. I get Gary Scott Beatty’s Indie Comics Magazine’s emails. Today’s triggered this post, as I read, "DC had 51% of the comics unit share in October. That was a whopping 21 points over Marvel. My diamond brand manager said indie books are still struggling, some canceled, going up against books like Action Comics #1, #2 and #3."

I knew it wasn’t just me. Hard for all us little guys to go up against the Superheroes at full strength. Bad time to try getting an indie book noticed.

So this post is a bit of a plea. If you’re a web site reviewer, reporter, writer or blogger, please consider reviewing or covering an indy book or two this week. If you’re a comic book reader, please consider buying an indie comic book this week. You can find them at sites like IndyPlanet.com and DriveThruComics.com, to name just a couple.

Of course I’d love you to check out my new book The Adventures of Alibi Jones #1... more at http://AlibiJones.com. If you review or cover comics and want a pdf of the book, please email me at mike (dot) luoma (at) gmail (dot) com.

It’s hard out here for an indie comic trying to promote. Show your favorite indie creators a little love if you can this week. The future is looking bright, but right now we’re all a little black and blue from the New 52.

Artists Needed For Two New Projects

If you've come to the blog as a result of my posting for artists, welcome. Thanks for checking this out! At this point I'm seeking pencilers or penciler/inkers for two stories which will be published by Earthbound Comics.

Always like to be up front - These aren't cash jobs. Instead, creators working with Earthbound get a comp and then issues at cost plus shipping to sell to make profits (akin to putting out your own book). There's more information at their site: http://earthboundcomics.com/index.php/submissions/. If this arrangement sounds beneficial to you, read on and see if you'd like to join my team.

I'm looking for an artist for the 21-page science fiction story "Alibi Jones: Vacation". This will be the centerpiece of issue #2 of The Adventures of Alibi Jones from Earthbound Comics. -- Alibi is an established character. This new story needs a sharp, futuristic look consistent with the character's other appearances in issue one and other stories. This story features Alibi trying to take a break with his girlfriend Katie on the planet Paradise, only to find a coup going down that they get caught up in.

I'm also seeking an artist for the 17-page urban fantasy "The Shift: Angela's Story". This is destined for the second issue of the anthology title Earthbound Comics Presents. -- Angela is seeing things. Things like strange looking woodland creatures walking down city streets, there one second, gone the next. Houses suddenly coated by growing ivy, only to appear clean a moment later. Now she's met a man who tells her what she's seeing is very real - our world and a world of magic are "Shifting" together thanks to the machinations of an evil sorcerer from the magic world. Angela's ability to see "The Shift" makes her special - this new acquaintance is looking to recruit her to his side of an upcoming battle.

Need to find the right artist to make these stories shine. If you are interested, please send me an email at: mike.luoma@gmail.com. Please include information about your work and links to your material online. Looking forward to hearing from you – Mike

It's 2135 - Alibi is in the SAIF (Solar Alliance Interplanetary Force) Mediation Corps. He handles negotiations between humanity and alien races, and occasionally oversees negotiations between alien races. He's the adopted son of the former head of the Solar Alliance, Anita Capituna, his "Aunt Anita". Alibi and his girlfriend Katie are trying to get some rest and relaxation on the vacation planet Paradise. It's not working out so well, as the colony's leadership has just been overthrown in a violent coup...

19th Century History Inspires 22nd Century Tale!

It's an encore presentation on the new podcast episode:

Hear an encore presentation of the audio adaptation Alibi Jones: Blind Eye on today's episode of The Glow-in-the-Dark Radio Podcast! "Blind Eye" is now a part of the Audio AnthologyPodioracket Presents: Glimpses - available atPodiobooks.com - AND is included in comic book form in The Adventures of Alibi Jones #1, just out from Earthbound Comics! Seemed like a good time to feature the story here on my own podcast once again.
Wanted to give you something more than just the story, though - so there's a long bonus section after the story itself where I go into the historical roots of"Blind Eye". Even though the story is science fiction set in the next century, it is based on actual events that occured back in the 19th century. Find out what those events were on this episode! **If you want just the bonus material, it begins at the 32:32 mark. The story begins about 6 minutes in, after a promo for Podioracket Presents: Glimpses**
As for the story -  It's 2135 - Alibi is in the SAIF (Solar Alliance Interplanetary Force) Mediation Corps. He handles negotiations between humanity and alien races, and occasionally oversees negotiations between alien races. He's the adopted son of the former head of the Solar Alliance, Anita Capituna, his "Aunt Anita". At a diplomatic function he attends on his aunt's behalf, Alibi hears talk of a new settlement. But the news sounds suspicious - could "Poyas" be more con job than colony? And what is Alibi's old girlfriend Shirra doing messed up in it?
The Adventures of Alibi Jones #1 is just 99 cents for the digital download at Drive Thru Comics: http://comics.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=94851 And it's just $2.99 for the 40 page printed comic book at Indy Planet: http://indyplanet.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=6027

Alibi Jones in Podioracket Presents - Glimpses

"Alibi Jones: Blind Eye" originally appeared as a comic book story in Spacebound! #1 from Earthbound Comics last year, with art by Meisha. After some changes at Earthbound, the Spacebound title was retired. Now you'll find "Blind Eye" reprinted in the brand-new comic book The Adventures of Alibi Jones #1 from Earthbound Comics!

I recorded an audio adaptation of "Blind Eye" for my Glow-in-the-Dark Radio podcast. Now, the audio adaptation has a home as part of Podioracket's latest anthology, Glimpses! You can download and hear the story anytime - along with some other great stories! Podioracket Presents - Glimpses - A free audio book from Podiobooks.com

Review of "Earthbound Comics Presents" #1 by Pissed Off Geek

Pretty Cool Review of Earthbound Comics Presents #1 at Pissed Off Geek:

"As a whole the anthology is strong and does what it aims to do. It gets the reader interested in the stories presented to them and catches their interest for future editions and comics based on the stories themselves. Its choice in stories also took me back to my childhood of reading 2000 AD, it’s not just a bland collection of stories that are very similar but a mix up of horror, sci-fi and comedies of different styles. It will be interesting to see what more is to come from Earthbound Comics."

Got A Nice Nod from the G Man @ Comic Related - Life in Four Colors

Bill Gladman returns with a new column at Comic Related - #37 of his "Life in Four Colors"

It's a bit about Captain Marvel - Mar-Vell - and he includes me among those who might write him well - Thanks, Bill!

First Review of The Adventures of Alibi Jones!

I've started sending out the review copies of my upcoming new comic book The Adventures of Alibi Jones. Gordon Dymowski over at Blog THIS, Pal! is the first reviewer in - and he likes it!
http://www.blogthispal.com/2011/09/ballad-of-alibi-jones.html

"...the kind of comic that's worth bugging your local comic shop owner to stock....or if that owner is a DC/Marvel zombie, make the decision to head to a cooler comics shop... Buy and read this book. You'll thank me later."

The Vatican Assassin Trilogy eBooks Now 99 Cents Each!

Been thinking about doing this for a while...

The eBooks for my first three novels - my Vatican Assassin Trilogy: Vatican Assassin, Vatican Ambassador, and Vatican Abdicator - are now 99 cents each!

I changed the price for the Kindle editions, but Amazon takes a little while to change over. The new prices are in effect already at Smashwords: http://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/mikeluoma

And here's a link to my Amazon Author Page for when they change over there: http://www.amazon.com/Mike-Luoma/e/B002BM1PYU/

First Draft, Second Alibi Novel...

Reading from my manuscript today... no guarantees it will stay this way.

Listen to an excerpt from the first draft of the next Alibi Jones novel - tentatively titled Alibi Jones and The Sunrise of Hur - on today's episode of Glow-in-the-Dark Radio! It's the first draft story of a solo mission of Alibi's to the Mad Planet Metcalf on today's 'cast. The planet's defense system seems to be speaking to - and laughing at - Alibi. But he's not hearing it - the sounds seem to be echoing inside of Alibi's mind!

I also preview The Adventures of Alibi Jones #1, coming October 1st from Earthbound Comics, and give a status report after the story excerpt, running through a list of the many projects in the works. There are a bunch of them! You can read page one of Alibi Jones In Over His Head - the 4 page short found in the new Earthbound Comics Presents #1 - at http://alibijones.com.

That comic book short is getting some rave reviews! Aint It Cool News said Alibi Jones In Over His Head "...is a gentle, humorous tale that brings to mind the lighter works of sci-fi legends such as Henry Kuttner or Ray Bradbury" http://www.aintitcool.com/node/51101#9.

We Are Gray

A note from Mike: After we were attacked on 9/11/01 I wrote the following poem. It captured for me both the sense of anger the USA felt at being attacked as well as the sense of unity the country felt for a period afterwards. I recorded a new reading of it yesterday for my latest podcast. Thought I'd break it out by itself for today and reprint the poem here, in commemoration of the anniversary and those we lost.

We Are Grey

When the Great Buildings collapsed,
Hit by the fists of Bin Laden,
The clouds of billowing dust
Coated the running escaping.
Many were killed in the blasts,
Innocents used by Bin Laden.
Better, then, covered in dust,
Then lost in the ruins of the breaking.
After the vicious attacks
By the cowardly demon Bin Laden,
All of them, covered in dust,
Coughing, and choking, and shaking…

Today we all are gray.
The dust took the color away.
No black, no white – the same.
We are gray today – the same.
When the terrorists hit,
Did they give a shit
About colors, race or creed?
We’re all gray… and red we bleed.
