Choosing A New Pope

When I was writing Vatican Ambassador a few years ago, I did a ton of research into the practices of the Vatican, the Curia, and into the process by which the College of Cardinals picks a new pope. Though raised Roman Catholic and an active church participant up and through my teen years, it was still fascinating to learn about the papal selection process in greater depth than I'd been exposed to through experience.

Now, I'm writing about the Vatican and the New catholic Church in the year 2110. The small "c" is deliberate - this new, ecumenical Christian church of the future is "catholic" in the word's broader sense. However, to entice the actual Catholics to join, the new church did agree to let them bring along the trappings of the papacy. Figured that gave me the literary license to use what I wanted and streamline the rest in the context of my story...

Thought you might enjoy reading an excerpt from Vatican Ambassador that gives a little insight into the process. This first part of Chapter Fourteen features lead character BC's quick ascendancy into the College of Cardinals and participation in the process of choosing a new Pope. Here's a bit of  Vatican Ambassador:

When mass numbers of people get sick, things break down. Even as humanity advances, it still takes raw people power to keep the machines running.
BC has a hell of a time booking passage down to Earth. When he finally secures a ride, the flight itself is nearly empty.
The Rio Di Janeiro spaceport on Earth is another shock. Many of the shops and stores are shuttered. Other travelers are scarce.
BC hunts around for a connecting flight to Vatican City. It takes a few hours. He books his flight and calls the Vatican to let them know he’s on the way.
BC lands in Rome to a very different greeting. The media have somehow been alerted. Reporters surround the gate at the airport as BC disembarks. They spot BC and begin hurling questions at him.
"Ambassador! Where have you been?"
"Father Campion! What do you know about the plague?"
"Why haven’t you been infected, Father Campion?"
"How did it happen?"
"Do you think this is the work of the UIN?"
"What’s your reaction to the Pope’s death?"
BC ignores them all best he can as he walks past. He breathes a sigh of relief when he spots a waiting Vatican transport with his name on it. He hops in and rolls away from the pursuing, clamoring crowd.
Aside from the media dogs, there weren’t many other people there at the port.
How bad is it?
BC is sent to the College of Cardinals immediately upon his arrival at the Vatican, his luggage whisked away to some rooms he’s told he’ll be shown to later. Cardinals Hardwick and Terpa are waiting for BC when he arrives outside the Sistine Chapel.
"Cardinal Campion, you’re just in time!" Terpa says, greeting BC.
"What? I’m not a Cardinal…" BC demurs.
Terpa and Hardwick nod.
"You are," Terpa says to him.
"But I was never even a Bishop… That’s a done deal?" BC asks.
"A done deal," Hardwick says. "There aren’t many of us left," he tells BC. "You were elevated in absentia by the late Pope Peter the Third, under special circumstances. We’ll make it official while you’re here in Rome. You’ll be elevated to bishop at the same time."
"Okay," BC says, surprised, trying to think.
Made a Cardinal against my will! These people are desperate.
"How bad has this sickness gotten?" BC asks them.
"It’s bad," Terpa says. "It is a plague such as the world has never seen. Billions are dying, Cardinal Campion. Not all who are exposed are infected… it seems to affect people at random. It’s very strange."
"The UTZ Scientists have announced cures twice," Hardwick says, "only to find their announcements have been premature, that their measures don’t measure up."
"I’m afraid many people are sure it’s the work of the Muslims," Terpa tells him.
"Really?" BC asks.
"We’ve seen the polls," Hardwick says. "We hear it from our own people."
"It’s not the Muslims," BC tells them. They both stare at him. Terpa finally breaks the silence.
"What…" she says, and then she pauses. "How do you know?" she asks him. "Mars has been silent, closed off."
Hardwick shakes his head.
"There’s been no traffic from Mars," he tells BC, "and no communications, either. There’s no way to know how the UIN has been effected."
"I know that," BC admits, "but I also know that this ‘plague’ wasn’t caused by the UIN."
"You know? Well…" Terpa says. "…what are you saying? This is natural? Or is someone else responsible?" she asks BC.
"I’ve spoken with some UTZ scientists," BC says, stretching the truth. "They think it may be extraterrestrial."
I don’t want to tell them about The Project… yet.
"We’ve heard that, too," Hardwick says. "But couldn’t they have found a virus or something on Mars and somehow, I don’t know, ‘weaponized’ it? That would make it ‘extraterrestrial’, wouldn’t it?"
Now he’s a Cardinal and a scientist?
"Not really… They don’t have the technology to create this sickness," BC explains. "Our scientists admit that even they couldn’t create this."
"I haven’t heard any of them admit that," Hardwick says, the question in his voice.
"They haven’t publicly," BC tells him.
"Oh."
A group of young priests appear from inside the chapel and approach them.
"Primus inter pares? Your eminence?" the lead priest, a young African woman wearing bright blue clerical robes addresses Cardinal Hardwick.
"Yes, Reverend Chiamaka?"
"It’s time. The other Cardinals are waiting for you and the Secretary Cardinal to begin the Papal Conclave," Chiamaka says, nodding to Cardinal Terpa as well. "The chimney has been prepared. The chapel has been swept for any possible surveillance devices. All is in readiness, awaiting only the three of you."
"Well, then… as the Dean of the College of Cardinals, I officially invite you to join the conclave, Cardinal Campion!" Hardwick says to BC, extending his hand.
"Right now? I accept, I guess," BC says tentatively. He shakes Hardwick’s hand. They enter the chapel and the doors crash shut and are sealed behind them.
"Come," Hardwick says to BC and Terpa, "We have work to do."
The Sistine Chapel… Gets to me every time…
I didn’t know there was damage in here, too. It was never hit directly. It was one of the few buildings they protected.
Sadly, there has been some damage. Some of the wall frescoes are now cracked, or broken, with pieces fallen off. Several of Michelangelo’s masterpieces on the ceiling have lost chunks, ugly white patches showing through some of the master’s work.
Sad to see… Huh, there’s old Jeremiah up there… some say it’s a self portrait by Michelangelo… funny, I never read Jeremiah’s book until forced to by The Light. He puts the cur in curmudgeon. Look at him up there, angry and puzzled. Guess we have that in common…
"Watch where you’re going," Hardwick cautions BC. BC’s been so busy looking up he didn’t notice the chair he was about to walk into. The chapel has been furnished for the affair: large, red velvet cushioned, oaken thrones are arrayed along the side walls, facing each other.
BC looks around. Staring up at the ceiling he didn’t see the other Cardinals gathered around the altar. There aren’t as many as he’d thought there would be. He tries to make a quick count.
There are only about fifty people here… and a lot of them are pretty young to be Cardinals!
"Where’s everybody else? I thought we had over two hundred Cardinals in the College?" BC asks Hardwick and Terpa.
"We did," Terpa says.
"We now have 59 Cardinals," Hardwick says sadly.
"Counting me?" BC asks.
"Counting you," Hardwick tells him.
 "Oh. I see."
"Have a seat," Hardwick says, indicating a throne for BC.
"Thank you," BC says. Hardwick nods. He and Terpa then continue on up to the altar.
A throne… a throne of my own…
BC sits down. He looks across the chapel at some of the other Cardinals, already seated.
I feel like I just walked into a party I was not invited to… Talk about not belonging somewhere… what?
The Cardinal on the throne next to BC is talking to him in a soft voice. All BC hears is, "by the Cardinal Camerlengo, stand."
"What?" BC asks in a hoarse whisper.
"Stand up!" the old man snaps back at BC.
Cranky old dude! Well, I guess this is it…
Cardinal Camerlengo Hardwick, Dean of the College of Cardinals, stands before the altar and swears them all to secrecy. Terpa and two other Cardinals walk down the rows of chairs and hand each of them a slip of paper.
"Please be seated," Hardwick says as the last of the ballots is handed out. BC looks at his slip.
"Eligo in summum pontificem," BC reads. Luckily, there is a translation underneath the words:  I elect as supreme Pontiff...
BC looks around the room. He notices others doing the same.
I don’t even know any of these people! Maybe I’ll vote for myself… or Hardwick. Maybe Terpa… this church could use a female pope, a first for the NcC and Christianity in general. This is just the first ballot; it doesn’t mean anything anyway…
BC writes his own name down and laughs.
Why not? I’m sure we’ll find out who the real candidates are after this first vote.
Hardwick speaks from the altar.
"Please bring your ballot up, present it, and place it in this chalice," he tells the assembly, indicating an ornate, oversized gold and silver chalice on the altar, covered by a thin gold paten.
The Cardinals process up to the altar in an orderly fashion. BC tries not to smirk as he walks up to the altar, holds his vote aloft, and then slides it under the paten and into the cup. He is one of the last to vote. As he heads back to his seat, Terpa and the two other Cardinals line up with Hardwick for counting.
The counting takes a while. Each name for each vote is read aloud three times: Terpa reads the name aloud and writes it down on a tally sheet in front of her, then hands the ballot to the next Cardinal. The next Cardinal reads the name aloud as well, and then hands the ballot to the third Cardinal. The third repeats the name again, and then runs a needle and thread through the ballot, creating a string of punctured votes.
"Bernard Campion," Terpa says aloud, about halfway through the ballots. Her eyes lock with his briefly.
She does not look happy… guess she didn’t like my little joke…
"Bernard Campion," repeats the second Cardinal.
"Bernard Campion," echoes the third, and then he pokes the needle and thread through the ballot, adding it to his string.
One ballot for BC…
More names are called. It’s clear there won’t be a pope elected on this first vote, there are too many names for any candidate to have received a full two-thirds.
"Bernard Campion," Terpa says again, his name echoed by her two colleagues.
Wait a minute… Another ballot? Who else would vote for me?
BC hears his name come up again on two other ballots, his name repeated three times each time, before the voting is over.
This is insane…
The first vote finally over with no winner, Terpa and the other two Cardinals assisting in the voting gather all other notes from around the room, and then head to the back to burn the ballots and notes. The black smoke will let the outside world know there’s been no decision. While they perform the ritual task, Hardwick addresses the rest of the assembly.
"We do not have a new pontiff yet," he tells them, "but we do have four candidates who have received more than one vote. Cardinal Castellini of Turin has five in his favor. Cardinal Kibwe of Nairobi has four, as does Cardinal Hardwick, er, myself," he says, pausing awkwardly, visibly uncomfortable. "And, finally, Cardinal Campion of the Vatican Mission on Lunar Prime has three votes."
BC can feel the eyes of the other Cardinals on him. Luckily, Hardwick continues, drawing back their attention.
"We will vote again tomorrow, twice in the morning, and twice in the afternoon, if necessary," Hardwick tells them. "I would like to ask now for a vote on the number of ballots we will have before we look for a simple majority rather than a two-thirds majority.
"As time is of the essence, I suggest six, in hopes that we can elect a new pope in our third day. All in favor?"
The vote carries.
"Good!" Hardwick exclaims.
"Please follow Cardinal Terpa. She will lead you to the Domus Sanctae Marthae, where you’ll be staying. It’s similar to a staff-less hotel. Everything you need is, hopefully, provided. If there is anything more that you require, please see Cardinal Terpa or myself. We reconvene at 6 am tomorrow morning. Thank you, God Bless You all," he says, finishing.
"Amen," the assembly answers back.
The Cardinals begin filing out after Terpa, heading for their rooms.

And Now For The New Year... Hello 2013!

"...and so it begins..."

Words that have been used many times in literature, movies and TV shows; however, in my brain the words are spoken in the voice of the Vorlon Kosh in Joe Straczynski's Babylon 5... 'cause that's the way I'm wired. I'm also hearing Dan Wilson's voice singing "...every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end..." as Semisonic's "Closing Time" plays on my cranial radio. The new year does bring with it some new beginnings and the old one ushers out with it a few odds and ends.

Got a lot of new creative work out in 2012. The challenge in the new year will be in promoting what's out there and creating more cool stuff that people will want to read and explore. The next Alibi novel will be building off the just-released short story "Alibi Jones and the Ghost In The Machine" in the Hunting Ghosts anthology. I've been writing and outlining that project, and it will probably be my next major writing project. Probably. But there is this other thing... takes place in the true Arthurian past and the far future in Alibi's & the Vatican Assassin's universe. Been wrestling with pieces of it for years. Might wrestle with it some more and see what happens.

And there will be comics in the new year! Glow-in-the-Dark Radio Comics! The imprint is born anew. As 2012 ended, Ben Ferrari decided to fold Earthbound Comics. Sad as I was to see that happen, I understood Ben's reasons - there's no bad blood between us. And the artists I work with have all agreed to continue on as a revitalized Glow-in-the-Dark Radio Comics! My new issue twos from Red Hot, Good Samaritan and Alibi Jones will still be appearing, only now from Glow-in-the-Dark Radio Comics. I'm emailing with an artist right now about turning my romantic comedy miniseries Strike Out! into a reality, a new project in the works. There's a final issue of the Vatican Assassin adaptation yet to come, one of the first releases from the new Glow-in-the-Dark Radio Comics!

That's some idea of what's ahead as we sail on into the new year...

A Creative, Productive 2012

Sat down yesterday to assess the year that's just gone by. Did a little music post, and then started to look back over my creative accomplishments for the year. Took me lots longer than I though it would - made me realize it's actually been a pretty good year! First a list, then a look back.

Guest post on the "Contradictions of Creativity" for the blog Chocolate Scotch: http://www.chocolatescotch.com/2012/04/74-mike-luoma/.

Not bad. It was a year with some nice, creative high points - a productive year.

December brought a brand new Alibi Jones story "Alibi Jones and the Ghost In The Machine" in Hunting Ghosts: Thrilling Tales of Paranormal Investigation a new anthology from Black Oak Media. This new Alibi Jones story takes place after the new novel and stands alone as a single story: http://www.amazon.com/Hunting-Ghosts-Thrilling-Tales-Paranormal/dp/1618760165/.

November marked the release of my new second edition of Vatican Ambassador. When re-podcasting the novel this past summer I revised/rewrote about half of the book! The paperback also got a new cover, to match the update my eBook covers received earlier in the year. Vatican Ambassador is now big, shiny and gold! Also delivered a third installment in my look at Marvel Comics' Star-Lord for my Cosmic Crackle column at Comic Related, including an interview with writer Timothy Zahn: http://comicrelated.com/news/18390/star-lord-part-3

Celebrated wide release of Alibi Jones and the Sunrise of Hur in October. When you self-publish, you rely on your distributors to get your books out into the retail outlets of the marketplace. I use Lulu.com for print on demand paperbacks - they get those into Amazon. It takes about a month. Smashwords.com does most of my eBook distribution. The various retailers they ship to add titles at different rates, with the longest also taking about a month. So... about a month or so after releasing Alibi Jones and The Sunrise of Hur, I could finally celebrate it being available everywhere!

October also saw the release of Earthbound Dossier, a pin-up book filled with the heroes appearing in Earthbound Comics' books. I was heavily involved in the production and release of the book, featuring contributions from over 20 creative people – it came out really well. Kudos to Ben Ferrari of Earthbound for shepherding the project from concept to reality. It's free – here, have a copy: http://comics.drivethrustuff.com/product/106128/Earthbound-Dossier

Albi Jones and The Sunrise of Hur was officially published on September 16th, 2012. A long time in the creating. It was great to get the novel out. Still currently serializing the audiobook chapters on my weekly Glow-in-the-Dark Radio Podcast. That wasn't all for September. Another of my Star-Lord columns for Comic Related – Part two - came out, covering the years when Doug Moench wrote the character: http://comicrelated.com/news/17937/star-lord-part-2.

August was a fun month that included attending both Pi-Con and The Boulder Triple-A Convention. Invited as a guest for my writing to Pi-Con once again, and represented the radio station at the Boulder conference, hearing over 30 different musical acts in 3 days. Also managed to win the Seven Daysies Award for Best Hair on a Local Personality, an "award" from the local weekly newspaper. And all month I was showing off the new, full-color Good Samaritan: Unto Dust #1 – written by me, art by Federico Guillen and color by Ken Lateer, released by Earthbound Comics on August 1st.

Published a few Cosmic Crackles web columns in July. Started the series of columns on Star-Lord at Comic Related. Both Chris Claremont and Steve Englehart were interviewed for a look at Star-Lord's origins: http://comicrelated.com/news/17021/star-lord-part-1. And earlier in the month, I wrote a 3 part look back at the original Guardians of the Galaxy team: http://comicrelated.com/news/16790/guardians-of-the-galaxy  http://comicrelated.com/news/16856/guardians-of-the-galaxy.

In June, Glow-in-the-Dark Radio became part of the Comic Related Podcasting Network. It was an honor to be asked to join them as they expanded, joining the ranks of Zone 4, The Related Recap and more: http://www.comicrelated.com/podcasts.php. My weekly rewriting/rerecording and repodcasting of Vatican Ambassador was ongoing. I was also working on the new Alibi Jones short story which has just recently been released.

In May we published my free eBook short story "Souverain: The Kid" by Earthbound Comics, on the 1st. A free prose story which was originally featured in the comic book Souverain #1, this stand-alone freebie was an attempt to attract new readers. My first column for Comic Related also appeared in May. I'd put a piece on Thanos together in light of his scene at the end of The Avengers movie, and it became my first Cosmic Crackle for CR: http://comicrelated.com/news/16094/the-mad-titan

Glow-in-the-Dark Radio reached it's 200th episode in April. The podcast episode featured some friendly greetings and the first podcast of Alibi Jones and the Wishing Stone: http://glowinthedarkradio.podomatic.com/entry/2012-04-22T12_45_37-07_00. Also wrote a Guest post on Creativity for the blog Chocolate Scotch in April: http://www.chocolatescotch.com/2012/04/74-mike-luoma/.

Updated the cover of VaticanAssassin in both paperback and ebook with brand new layout and art, and updated the eBook covers on the rest of the trilogy in March. Time had come. The old, boring black ones needed spiffing up! Vatican Ambassador, as I mentioned, would later get some interior spiffing up as well.

February brought a proud creative moment, when Earthbound Comics published Introducing...Red Hot #1 – art by Rhys ap Gwyn – February 1st. By the way, Rhys is ready to work on more of the series now, so expect more Red Hot in 2013!

January was spent promoting my new audio book collection, as The Adventures of Alibi Jones: Six Short Stories came out in the final days of December, and appeared in iTunes as January began: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/adventures-alibi-jones-six/id570595252?mt=2

The creative year that was... good to take a look back. Now, time to take a deep breath and head onward into the future - hello 2013!

2012 In Review - Music

Last day of the year – good excuse to look back and assess stuff as the year draws to a close. Here's a little list of great albums for 2012. Played songs from my Top Five albums of 2012 on The Point earlier today – I'll include the song I played next to those five in this slightly longer list:

Top Albums of 2012 - In No Particular Order, Kind Of...

The Avett Brothers – The Carpenter ("The Once And Future Carpenter")
John Fullbright – From The Ground Up ("Jericho")
World Party – Arkeology ("Everybody's Falling In Love")
Joe Jackson – The Duke ("I'm Beginning To See the Light...")
Django Django – Debut ("Default")
Donald Fagen – Sunken Condos
The Beach Boys – That's Why God Made The Radio
Frank Turner – Last Minutes and Lost Evenings
Shearwater – Animal Joy
The Smashing Pumpkins – Oceania
Swale – A Small Arrival

There were more cool albums released, some I'm just not remembering as I write this, others just didn't click with me personally – this is a subjective list, not a critical assessment.

Here's a taste of the story:

ALIBI JONES AND THE GHOST IN THE MACHINE
By Mike Luoma

“I just saw Mac.”
“Mac?”
“Mac. My old boyfriend.”
“The bad ex? Out here? What, he bothering you again? Calling you on the com? I warned him about...”
“No. Not him. The one before him. Peter MacDonald.”
“The SAIF Captain? But I thought... isn't he? He died.”
“Yup.”
“So how did you 'just' see him? Watching old footage?”
“Alibi, tell me... Do you believe in ghosts?”
***
Reality rippled.
Space blurred, refocused, readjusted around an ebony shape as it materialized and obscured the velvet black, purple-red nebula beyond it. The hulking alien leviathan, an interstellar traveler of ancient appearance, loomed over the Librecampista and Librecampista de Dos, two small cargo vessels owned by the “Independent” Hector Ruiz.
Hector captained the interstellar trading ship Librecampista, had for over ten years, plying trade lanes around and across the border of the Solar Alliance near Depot colony. His long-trusted associate Bob Bond piloted the other ship. Both men would bristle if you called them pirates. They didn't steal from other people, but didn't always operate above the law, either. Like most people around the borders of the Solar Alliance, they got by.
As their new visitor appeared, surprising them, Bond began running every scan available to him from the bridge of the Librecampista de Dos. The new arrival could be a threat. Could be harmless. Hard to know. Thing was mammoth and tenebrous enough to seem a threat. Something about it rubbed Bond the wrong way. It felt like death.
Bond called over to Hector's vessel as he scanned incoming data.
“Holy... Hector, you seeing this?” Bond asked. “That's one giant, dead old ship out there!”
“Seein' what, Bobby?” Hector said. He peered at the viewscreen in front of him, trying to make out any details in the inky black surface of the new arrival.
“Very funny, Hector,” Bond said.
“Space junk, amigo,” Hector said. “Could be some serious salvage money.”
“That thing is huge!” Bond said. “I don't know, Hec – there's something not right about it.”
“It's dead. Inert. Muerto. Didn't know you were so superstitious, Bobby,” Hector ribbed his friend. “You sound like my mother!”
“Tell you what. You want it? You can have it. We're going back to Depot.”
“What?” Hector asked. He couldn't believe what he was hearing.
“It looks... wrong,” Bond said. “All wrong, Hector. I don't know how else to put it. I'm sorry, Hector. You want the salvage, it's all yours.”
“If I find something worth hauling off of there, you're comin' back to help, you hear?” Hector warned him.
“Maybe,” Bond said.
Hector watched as the Librecampista de Dos turned and flew off far enough to safely make the jump into Transpace. Then it disappeared.
“You're a superstitious old woman, Bobby!” Hector shouted at the com. Bond would hear the message once he crossed back out of Transpace.
“All right. Let's see what's up,” Hector said to his crew. “Bring us in closer to that thing.”

“Looks like someone's been here before us,” Hector said as he squinted at an unexpected feature mounted on the side of the shipwreck. On the screen in front of him searchlight dots from the Librecampista played over a small section of the alien vessel's surface, occasionally lighting up an incongruously normal, human-sized airlock door. “That's a portable airlock someone installed in this old cascabillo,” Hector said.
“Work of the SAIF Corps of Engineers,” Hector's ship's own engineer, Dr. An Ryoshi, said from her perch on one of the passenger seats at the back of the bridge. The trading ship's crew of six were all gathered on the bridge. Each wanted to see more of the spooky old ship that had appeared outside. “At least, looks like their work. From here,” she added.
Hector brought the Librecampista closer in to the giant old wreck. His copilot Janice ran new scans on the anachronistic airlock as they drew nearer.
“Definitely SAIF handiwork,” Janice said. “Few years old.”
The lights on the bridge dimmed.
“What the? Janice, what's going on?” Hector demanded.
“Power drain!” she said. “We're getting drained – power plant is down to eighty percent power.”
Ryoshi stepped up to the console next to Hector. She appropriated one of the floating viewscreens and began looking through incoming scanning data.
The lighting dimmed more.
“Seventy-five... and dropping, Hector!” Janice warned.
“If it's that ship that's draining us, we're not detecting any connections,” Ryoshi said. “And no sign of an energy build-up over there.”
“Dios mio... if?” Hector said, exasperated. “Something's draining our power! Bet it's that ship. Easy bet!” He punched at the bridge controls.
The Librecampista turned around and began pulling away from the old hulk.
“Tell me when the power drain stops,” Hector said to Janice. “Is it slowing down as we move away?”
“Yeah. Looks like,” Janice said.
The trading ship continued pulling away from the old wreck.
“Okay, it's stopped,” Janice said, after just over a minute had passed. “The draining effect has ceased. We're at sixty-eight percent power, but we're not losing any more.”
“Nor are we gaining power back, however,” Ryoshi said, nodding at the controls in front of her. “We should keep moving so the power reserves can build back up.”
Hector nudged the controls to keep the ship moving away.
One of the hired muscle spoke up.
“Not getting' any brighter,” Mercer said as he looked around the dimly lit bridge.
'Neither are you,” the other muscle, Swenson, snarked at his fellow Security and Handling Officer.
“Shut it, you two,” Hector said.
He was beginning to feel the same sense of unease Bob Bond had been describing. Just an uneasy feeling that something wasn't right. Something was wrong.
He felt cold.
Their eyes were blinded as a pillar of light appeared and glared a sickly greenish yellow in the center of the bridge. The light became a blurred and strangely shaped man, and then seemed to focus. In the middle of the room stood a translucent green astronaut, in a helmeted SAIF EVA suit.
Hector could not make out any details of the phantom astronaut's face inside of the helmet. If the ghostly astronaut even had a face. The figure raised its right arm, as if grabbing for the crew of the Librecampista.
“No!” The figure rasped in a rough mechanical voice. “Don't let me die! Don't let me... die again!”
“Dios Mio!” Hector gasped. He turned back to the ship controls.
Hector punched in a Transpace jump and prayed they were far enough away from the gravity footprint of the old ship to make it clean. As the engines complained at the sudden demand for Transpace, Hector also prayed the ghostly green astronaut would go away when they jumped.
“No!” the glowing green apparition cried. “Don't let me die AGAIN!”
***
Alibi Jones sat on the bridge of his Cruiser watching footage from the mission package sent by SAIF Command. His Covert Ops team's members were posing as independent contractors to work openly with the Project and the Solar Alliance Interplanetary Force on this current investigation, as a favor to his aunt Anita. His Cruiser was masquerading as the Free Trader A.D. Foster, working the Depot trade routes.
The recording in front of Alibi alternated between a humorless man with a severe crew-cut in a SAIF Commander's uniform and an Independent Trader dressed in flamboyant maroon, gold and black.
“A haunted ship? Are you kidding me?” Garrison Commander Sharkovski asked.
Alibi knew the man was still new to his post, appointed a few months ago after a corruption scandal cleaned out the old SAIF hierarchy on Depot. He obviously didn't suffer fools.
“You want me to believe there's some kind of old, haunted ship out there?” Sharkovski said.
“Look, man, I know you're new there, I get it. Respect. You don't have to tough-guy me,” Hector Ruiz said. “Maybe you don't realize this, but I'm an Independent – ain't my habit to call in to the SAIF garrison to chit-chat. Just trying to tell you there's some sort of old alien husk floating out at those coordinates I sent ya. And some kind of spaceman ghost with it that appeared on my bridge, saying 'don't let me die'! It was messed up!”
“What sort of cargo are you carrying, Independent?” Shakovski asked. “Hallucinogens?”

Alibi laughed as he switched off the footage. His feline-like Dakhur co-pilot Kat appeared on the bridge and made his way up to his flight seat on Alibi's right.
“What are you watching?” Kat asked. “Some more of your human com-eh-deeee?”
“Not exactly,” Alibi said. “The mission package. The first report of the 'alien derelict' – our 'ghost ship' – at least this time around.”
“This time?” Kat asked. “I did not realize there was another time.”
“Yeah,”Alibi said. “It appeared before. About five years ago. No talk of any ghosts back then, though, according to the reports. No talk of anything, really.”
Kat cocked his head to the side, inquisitive.
“None of it was made public knowledge. I never heard anything about it, myself,” Alibi explained. “Another covert ops team investigated back then. But most of them didn't make it back. Commander of the mission actually got ripped in half.”
“Yeoewerrr,” Kat growled.

Artist Wanted: Romantic Comedy

Want to try something different? I've written a romantic comedy, a three-act – three issue – miniseries called Strike Out! I'm looking for the right artistic collaborator to bring it to life.

Mike Luoma here – http://mikeluoma.com – looking for the right artist or team of artists to collaborate with on this unique project, primarily pencilers, but this is a different sort of story so I'm open to different ideas, so long as the storytelling works. The books will be published by Earthbound Comics in the new year – very cool they believe in this. The script is ready to go. I'll be handling the lettering and production.

Still trying to make a name for myself and get my work out to a wider audience. Have gained enough traction that my books get reviewed and the work gets noticed. You may have seen or heard about The Adventures of Alibi Jones #1, Introducing... RED HOT! #1, Souverain #1 and Good Samaritan: Unto Dust #1 – all released by Earthbound Comics. I've also released books under my own imprint, Glow-in-the-Dark Radio Comics, like Vatican Assassin, Panthea Obscura: Deifornication, Everybody Lies and more.

One caveat - This is not a cash up front job. Creators working with Earthbound Comics get a comp and can then buy issues at cost to sell to make profits, somewhat akin to putting out your own book. Beyond that, Earthbound does offer back-end percentages dependent on sales. There's more information at their site: http://earthboundcomics.com/index.php/submissions/terms-for-creators/ As your collaborator, I'd be sharing the IP on the story with you. If you're in for all three issues, we're co-creators.

If all this sounds good to you, maybe you'd like to join my team. Get in touch – email me at glowinthedarkradio (at) gmail (dot) com.
