Happy Thanksgiving! Been a while – March – since I sent you one of these newsletter things. Busy with work. Some of the "fruits" of those labors are now ready for "picking" – time to take a break from making stuff to share some of them with you. I've got a lot to be thankful for this year. Back at work full time on the radio since May on The Point... On the air weekdays 10a 'til 3p, I'm also the Music Director, a job I love! Nights and weekends are devoted to writing and creating... I'm in the middle of production and lettering on Vatican Assassin – The Graphic Novel Adaptation Issue #3. Cristian Navarro has finished the 24 pages of art. I hope we can have the book out before the end of December. This is a comic book version of my first novel. We follow BC – Bernard Campion – he kills people for the Pope of the New catholic Church in the year 2109, while an interplanetary religious war rages on!You can read the first two issues for free online or get a print copy at http://vaticanassassin.com.

I'm proud to introduce you to the artist on my new book Good Samaritan: Unto Dust #1 – Federico Guillen! He has done some amazing work! Juan Carlos Quattordio introduced the two of us, as Federico was looking to work on his first American comic book. His work is a revelation – pun intended. He has his own realistic pencil-sketch style that fits the setting of the tale.

The Story: It's 1965 in Boston, Massachusetts. Father Bill Sullivan is a Roman Catholic priest who wields an awesome power he believes is given to him by God: The "Power of the Holy Spirit." Good Samaritan (as he calls himself) occasionally renders ultimate judgment - turning criminals into dust while proclaiming, "Remember Man that thou art DUST and unto dust thou shall return!"

The print issue is now available through Indy Planet, and the pages are being released for free reading on Sundays and Wednesdays – page 10 just went up today. Get to either or both at http://goodsamaritanuntodust.com.

He wasn't as kind to my writing (though in my defense, Good Samaritan was written before Alibi... just sayin'):

...I enjoyed the story a good deal as it went out, but I found it to be a little too sporadic. In one instance we were at point A, then on the next page we jumped to point C. I missed the middle ground in there. The dialogue was good, but again a little choppy. I found the action to be the highlight here though. I find the characters intriguing enough to come back and with a good cliffhanger ending I plan on it.

The first issue of the new series by Mike Luoma, “Unto Dust” #1 was not quite what I expected from the cover.

The main character, a Catholic priest named William Sullivan is apparently a super hero on the side. While spending his days ministering to his flock and helping those in need, he spends at least a night a week wearing a domino mask, flying, glowing and fighting apparitions bent on bloodshed.

Luoma has set us up with a mystery almost from the get-go. The time is 1965 and much is changing in the world in general and in the Catholic Church in particular. There is a new pope, new church officials at many levels, and new policies such as the vernacular liturgy. In the midst of this, we have a super-powered minister out on patrol running into fights with demons and stumbling across the bodies of murdered altar boys.

The story is very solid, though I admit that at times the action on the pages was less than clear. During several of the fight scenes, I felt like I was watching a poorly edited movie that something unintentionally cut. I knew what was going on, but I felt like some details were missing. Whether this was the way it was written or the way the artist chose to present it, I couldn’t say. This was only an issue for the two fight scenes, however; the rest of the story was crystal clear.

I was drawn in at first glance by the art, which has a much more realistic bend than the other Glow In The Dark books I’ve read in the past. The artist, Guillen, is fairly talented and his work was a good fit for the book though at times it seemed a little thin. I got the impression that he was used to coloring his work, or having it colored as, while the art itself is good overall, the use of pencil shading (rather than adding depth with ink) is quite heavy as if the artist planned on these spots being inked or colored over. I found it distracting in places as seeing those sometimes extraneous lines took me out of the story.

All in all, this was a very solid comic I will definitely read the next issue. I’m told it’s currently available at IndyPlanet.com so go check it out for yourself.

New Alibi Jones Short Story in "Spcebound" Anthology from Earthbound Comics!

Alibi Jones is back – this time in a new comic book! Earthbound Comics has just released the new anthology “Spacebound” – and my story “Alibi Jones: Blind Eye” – with spectacular art by Meisha – opens the book. The story is set BEFORE the events in the novel Alibi Jones – it’s a prequel of sorts.
